Princesses of the Morning

Words and music copyright ©2002 by Blake Hodgetts

For my daughters, on the joyous occasion of being reunited with them in Oregon after two years' separation.

Cast away,
Marooned without a lifeboat I was tossed.
With nothing else to think of but how much I had lost,
My music kept me strong,
But nonetheless I feared my song
Had passed away.
I'd done my best, but that was not enough.
The road ahead was rocky and the waters were rough,
But someone helped me through:
I found my path, and thanks to both of you;

That's whom I'd miss with each new dawning,
It's you I'd dream of every night.
You're my princesses of the morning,
You are my angels of light.

On my own,
I'd think about your lives so far away.
It hurt me so to know I couldn't share every day,
And when I'd see you smile,
It always made each trip worth while,
And on the phone,
You'd tell me of your triumphs and your strife.
It meant so much to me to be a part of your life,
And finally I knew
No matter what, I had to be with you.

You, I'd miss with each new dawning,
It's you I'd dream of every night.
You're my princesses of the morning,
You are my angels of light.

I thought that I could pretend
things were just as before,
seeing you now and then
My mistake in the end
and there's one thing for sure;
I won't make it again.

Here and now
I pledge to you the love that's mine to give,
and know that first and foremost, for as long as I live,
The time I spend with you...
these treasured moments, all too few,
Appear somehow
among the hectic hours of our days
like dewdrops on a spiderweb lit by the dawn's rays,
so perfect and so true,
and that is why I flew:
I couldn't lose this precious time with you.

You, I'd miss with each new dawning,
It's you I'd dream of every night.
You're my princesses of the morning,
You are my angels of light.
